I get tired of all deep philosophical questions that ask you to find your life’s purpose. I ran into a few people last week who asked – ‘What would you do if you weren’t in the job you are today?’ Some people go a step further and quote directly from Up in the Air – ‘How much did they pay you to give up on your dreams?’
I have no doubts that the questions are well intended. If I have the skills and opportunity to become the front woman of a rock band, I would but alas, I don’t. If I had the patience, perseverance and financial freedom to be a full time writer, I would. There are usually valid reasons why people don’t follow their ‘dreams’ and chose something that puts bread on the table. Quite often, dreams are meant to be dreams and if dreams were to turn into full time jobs, they’d be rather awful.
And guess what, it might be hard for some to believe, but doing the stuff I do now is rather satisfying. So to answer your questions – ‘What would you do if you weren’t in the job you are today?‘, I’d most likely cry. I’m sure many others would too.
& if you are feeling particularly down today, take a listen to one of my favorite songs, shed a tear, pull yourself back up and get to work.
P.S: I’m back from a very long vacation where I forgot to take my laptop along. I am now back to routine and that may lead to me feeling a little crummy. But hey! I’m back.
